Simply Synopsis is a step-by-step guide for crafting a standout synopsis.
With special focus on romance, learn how to simply and succinctly construct an engaging and fresh synopsis that contains all vital information while hooking the reader, maintaining tension and emotion.
Simply Synopsis is a strategy that helps analyze your story and extract the key elements to include in your synopsis, whilst guiding you on how to determine what plot points and events to leave out.
It helps formulate the building blocks of the synopsis – the orientation, the major turning points, the resolution and the conclusion – and then demonstrates how to structure these paragraphs before piecing them together in a way that is engaging and exciting for the reader.
You will learn about tone, vocabulary, point of view and pacing. You will look at backstory – how and where does this fit into a synopsis? Secondary characters and secondary plots – yes or no? World-building – how much is enough?
The Simply Synopsis strategy is simple and straightforward, a step-by-step process that makes the daunting task of synopsis creation much less daunting.

Simply Synopsis is a MUST for anyone who writes the word dreaded before synopsis.
Thank you Michelle. I would buy any of your “Simply” books. You simplify without dumbing down. That means clear, relevant information set out in a readily accessible way with clear examples, bullet point checklists and tables and more.

The most important thing to be said about ‘simply Synopsis’ is that it makes sense. By breaking it down into easily digestible pieces of information and valuable examples it’s easy to understand and follow. A must have for all new writers!

A must ‘how to’ guide for aspiring and emerging writers.
Ms Somers gives brilliant examples and advice on how to write a synopsis. Her book will help dispel the dread most writers, regardless of experience, feel about them. To condense 80,000 to 100,000 words into 100, 500, or even 1,000 words seems an impossible task. Ms Somer’s easy-to-follow instructions, examples, and diagrams help alleviate the fears and encourages writers to attempt (and succeed) in this important writing skill. Recommended reading 🙂

Clear synopsis writing guide.
Simply Synopsis as a reference book is refreshingly clear and straightforward. Michelle Somers’ instructions and method took the stress out of synopsis writing. I have used other resources which left me tangled in knots or despairing over the amount of work involved. Not so with this wonderful aid which I will use over and over again. Thank you, Michelle.

What a fantastic book!
If you want to master writing a sensational synopsis then this book is your bible. Easy to follow and great examples to help flush out and refine your GMC and major plot point to build a mini, mid-length and long synopsis.
A must have for any serious writer’s bookshelf.

Very helpful.
This relatively short book provides a template for writing a synopsis with heaps of examples and questions for you to ponder for your own story. Writing a synopsis can feel harder than writing the book! But following the guides and tips in this book will get you to a polished result 🙂

Synopses are horrible, malicious things designed to kill writers’ spirits. I’ve always been terrible at them (can you tell?) so I was eager to find something that might help me improve. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect – was Simply Synopsis just a basic guide to summarising a story? But it’s so much more than that. It breaks down how to hook in the reader, how to include your unique voice, how to present your main characters in the most interesting light, and how to hit all the vital bits of the plot and development without getting bogged down in detail. The book also shows how to reduce your synopsis to a one-pager then even smaller versions without losing too much of the original sparkle. There are loads of examples to help along the way.
I re-wrote an old synopsis while I read the book, and it’s almost unrecognizable from the original – it’s so, so much better now. I’ll be using Simply Synopsis to help write all my synopses from now on.

A MUST as a reference book on the business of writing a Synopsis.
Well thought out with space for scribbling ramblings or perfectly constructed ideas on building your synopsis.
Thank you for putting this together Michelle Somers!

I hate writing synopses. I really, really do. And to be honest, I wasn’t sure what I would get out of a book about writing them. Seriously, what could you possibly write a whole book about? All you do is write what happens, yeah?
Thank goodness I was frustrated enough to give this book a go. It’s not a huge read—I got through it in about an hour—which is great because I doubt I would have picked it up if I thought I’d spend a week reading it.
It’s not that this book told me what to include that helped—it showed me what to leave out. I write using the Michael Hague 6-stage structure, which fits perfectly with Simply Synopsis. It was really easy to then know what should be there and what shouldn’t.
My first pass writing the story was all about story structure.
My second pass was all about GMC (which wasn’t as obvious as I thought it would be)
My third pass (which I never would have thought about doing in a synopsis) was world-building.
My fourth pass was to jazz up the sentences.
What I really loved about this book was the examples that Michelle includes right the way through, and they aren’t limited to one genre, which was really helpful. There are exercises to do (I’m an ex-teacher, so I heartily approved of that) and the layout made it really easy to jump to the bits of text I was interested in for that pass.
Most importantly, there is just a ton of information here that makes you a better writer. It may be called Simply Synopsis, but the beginning writer will find useful information in here about all aspects of writing.
Definitely recommend!
